Dormer loft conversions

Once you have decided to get yourself a loft conversion and taken the logical next step of instructing Strictly Lofts to handle the job for you, you need to decide which kind of loft you need – a traditional or standard one, or what is commonly known as a dormer loft? While both have their advantages and disadvantages, it’s important that you make up your mind from the outset as, once work begins, it’s going to be pretty difficult for you to change your mind.

Dormer loft conversions are often chosen by those customers who want their loft to be an extra bedroom or other living space, rather than a study, or a games room, or whatever. A dormer loft involve removing the roof and extending the boundaries of the loft space. The net result of this is a box-like expansion growing out of the top of your property, and you’ve probably seen plenty of them in and around Surrey and West Sussex.

The chief advantages of a dormer loft conversion are that they offer greater head-room for whomever is living in your loft, and that they allow more natural light into the room.

As for disadvantages, by their very nature they tend to involve a lot more work compared to traditional loft conversions which can result in a higher cost of conversion. That said, you do of course reap the benefit of getting more room space in your house for that extra cost.

So how do we go about it?

Better by design

Unlike some loft conversion companies in the region, Strictly Lofts does more than just handle the brickwork and joinery. Among our team of dedicated and professional staff we have some experienced designers working for us. They will sit down with you to go over your plans for the new dormer loft conversion and then turn that vision into an attractive and practical design that will fulfil all of your specific requirements.

A solid framework

The lion’s share of work in a dormer loft conversion is removing the roof and extending the loft itself. This involves erecting exterior walls and a new roof (flat or sloped, depending on your preference). We do this first and make every effort to do it in a timely manner, as you never know when the weather is going to turn. This extension to the loft is carefully constructed to match the existing walls and roof of your building as closely as possible. At this stage, we also install any windows or skylights to give the loft more natural light.

Floors, walls, and doors

With the outer shell completed, it’s time to attend to the rest of the loft. Where needed, we will install new joists in the floor to give added support to the loft space. From there we can add new floorboards onto which we can lay the flooring of your choice, be it hard wood, parquet, carpeting, or anything else. Depending on the size of your loft, you may choose to split it into two or more smaller rooms. Knocking up a series of interior partition walls (complete with doors to get you from one to the other, of course) is a simple matter and quickly done thanks to our tireless team of workers.

A stairway to heaven

Getting into your loft is, of course, a priority. Since many only have access via an integrated ladder, we can install a more permanent, effective and, above all, safe method of entry. As part of our design process, we will figure out the best and most space- and cost-effective method of installing stair access to your new dormer loft conversion.

Finishing touches

Now that the overall structure is complete, you have a blank canvas in terms of additions and decorating. As part of our end-to-end service, we are happy to do that for you too. From dado rails and skirting boards, to a coat of fresh paint on the walls and ceiling, we can make your new loft ready for occupation from the beginning.
